Feature Article: Fashion Trends to Avoid

>> MESSAGE FROM DIANA

I've been out enjoying the summer weather with my little ones and have to laugh at some of the fashion trends I'm seeing. There's a thin line between being a fashion follower and a fashion victim and a whole lot of people are crossing it - namely, they're wearing styles that are popular but just don't work for them. Everyone has things that look better on them than others. Your mission, should you choose to accept it, is to find YOUR best looks. Today's article lists some trends to avoid.

PLEASE NOTE: Because of the 4th of July holiday next week, the next issue of this ezine will be two weeks from now, on July 12th.

Enjoy!

Fashion Trends to Avoid

Have you ever flipped through old photos of yourself and either laughed or cringed at how you used to look? Join the club. From hippie and disco to punk and Goth, we've all looked back at things years later and wondered, "What in the world was I thinking?"

It's really hard to understand why certain looks capture our imagination one day only to be ridiculed the next. Is it boredom? A need to explore the art? A desire to fit in with our peer group? Probably all of the above.

But all trends are not created equal. By all means, indulge in the ones that capture your fancy. But also be honest with your motives before indulging in any trend. Are you trying to make a statement - or are you blindly following the look of a favorite celebrity or a chic friend? ALWAYS stop and ask yourself, "Does this work for ME?"

If you have to talk yourself into it, changes are, it doesn't.

Here are a few of the current looks I'm seeing that look good on no one, including the runway models:

Dresses with Leggings

Love all the dresses, are okay with some of the leggings, don't like the two mixed together. Not only is it too many layers, particularly in the heat, but the pieces are often of different formality levels. What do you get when you mix a casual legging with a semi-formal dress? A look that doesn't work.

Too Many Flowers

Warm weather and flowers just go together, so it seems logical that flowers on dresses would be a hit. Alas, sometimes there can be too much of a good thing. Three-dimensional flowers are pretty, but they can overpower your figure and make you look like you're being eaten alive by a gigantic bloom. Opt for figure-flattering one-dimensional flowers instead.

Space Age

That "final frontier" has been a lure for designers for more than forty years and apparently, we're not done yet. While it's no secret that men are drawn to shiny things, the whole You-can-see-your-reflection-in-my outfit! is just a little too blatant for me. Try a diamond necklace, soft skin, and a come-hither smile instead.

Chunky and Clunky

They're high, they're heavy, and one day you'll wonder why in the world you spent your hard- earned money on them. Yes, sky-high wedges are really popular right now, but they don't inspire graceful walking and they're really hard to pack. They also make your feet look enormous. Opt for something lower and less obvious for a more versatile accessory.

Babushka, Baby

Yes, I know your Bubby wore one and her Bubby BEFORE her, but babushkas - the heavy headscarf folded into a triangle and tied under the chin - have never been considered a high fashion item. Until now. You'll see them all over the place come fall. By all means, keep your head warm in cold weather. But I'm not buying the humble villager meets haute couture mix. Neither should you. Try a chic silk scarf instead.

Trends can be fun today and make you laugh years from now. But be sensible about them. Don't squander your rent on a look that's going to be gone by mid-season. Instead, invest in classics, go cheap on trends, and only buy things that look good on YOU. It's the only way to justify the expense.
