How to Instantly Look Taller and Trimmer

Want to look taller? Thinner? Younger? Wealthier?

Then take your mother's advice and do one simple thing: sit up straight.

That's right.

By taking the time and making the effort to have good posture, you can look taller, thinner, younger, and wealthier - instantly!

I know, I know - it seems trivial. But it isn't. Getting good posture doesn't cost anything, but it can make a HUGE difference in how you look and feel as well as how you're perceived by others.

Here's why:

When you slouch, allowing your shoulders to roll forward and your tummy to bulge, you not only squish your internal organs, you weaken the muscles in your back and tummy. By standing up straight so your shoulders are aligned with both your ears and hips, you add height, stretch out the tummy, and make your muscles stronger by forcing them to hold you properly.

The end result? You'll look:

Taller

Roll your shoulder forward in a slump, then sit up straight. See the difference? You'll measure inches taller when you're properly aligned.

Good posture

Trimmer

Put your hand on your tummy and roll your shoulders forward again. See what happens? Your tummy bunches. Sit up straight and it goes away, making you look thinner.

Younger

Bone deterioration is common in old age, so slouching, by default, makes you look older. It also weakens your back muscles and makes you more vulnerable to back pain and injury. Want to look and feel younger? Stand up straight.

Richer

When people are tired, worn out, or frustrated, they slouch into a defeated posture. When they're confident and feel good about themselves, they walk with their back straight and their head held high. Rich, powerful people don't slouch; they command the room with their posture. So can you.

Successful

It's such a simple, simple thing, yet so few people do it.

When actress Jane Seymour was on the "Dancing with the Stars" show earlier this week, one of her fellow contestants commented on how graceful she is with her perfect posture and finished by saying, "She looks expensive" -- as opposed to all the cheap-looking women on the tabloid covers these days. It was a telling statement.

Grace Kelly, Audrey Hepburn, Jacqueline Kennedy - all were called elegant because they walked smoothly and stood up straight. True, all studied ballet (just TRY to do a plié or a pirouette without proper alignment - I dare you!), but you don't have to spent time in a dance studio to master good posture.

Just turn sideways in a full length mirror and imagine a rod going through your body from the top of your head to the bottom of your feet. Align your ears, shoulders, and hips to that imaginary rod, and feel what a difference it makes. Then practice walking and sitting with that same alignment for a couple of days, until it becomes second nature.

Once you master it, don't be surprised by all the comments. "Have you lost weight?" "Is that new?" "Wow! You look great!" They'll come, just wait.

All you have to do is stand up straight.
